What to do next

1

Confirm the actual route and vehicle combination

Standard dimensions are only part of the picture. Re-check the exact combination, route restrictions, and any local access constraints before moving the machine.

2

Keep this as a planning check, not final transport approval

If the load configuration changes, attachments stay on, or the haulage setup changes, run the check again before booking transport.

How the clearance check works

The calculator compares a machine's travel width, height, length and weight with the general Australian limits for vehicles and loads that run without a permit. For each measurement it reports whether the move is within limits, needs a Class 1 oversize overmass (OSOM) permit, or reaches a level where escorts, a police escort or a route assessment become likely. The overall result is the most demanding level across the four measurements.

Using the calculator

  1. Search the Plant Library by manufacturer or model, or, when signed in, pick an asset from your fleet that is linked to a library model. Width, height and length fill in from the model's transport dimensions where recorded, otherwise its overall dimensions; weight uses the operating weight, otherwise the gross weight.
  2. Check each figure, or type your own in metres and tonnes.
  3. Leave the low-loader or trailer option ticked when the machine travels on a trailer combination (length limit 19.0 m); untick it for a single vehicle (length limit 12.5 m).
  4. Read the result for each measurement, the overall permit level and the suggested next steps, then print it if needed.

Thresholds the calculator applies

  • Width: over 2.5 m needs a Class 1 OSOM permit; over 3.5 m adds pilot or escort vehicles; over 5.0 m a police escort; over 6.0 m a route-specific assessment.
  • Height: over 4.3 m needs a permit; over 4.6 m a route survey for bridges, power lines and other overhead structures is recommended; over 5.0 m a special route assessment.
  • Length: over the single-vehicle or combination limit needs a permit; over 22.0 m a pilot vehicle is added.
  • Mass: over 42.5 t is over-mass and needs a permit (above 43.0 t the result also asks you to check axle configuration and mass distribution); over 100.0 t is treated as heavy haulage needing special permits and a bridge assessment.

What the result does not cover

Each figure is compared exactly as entered. The weight check does not add the prime mover and trailer mass and does not check axle group limits, so enter the loaded combination mass if you want the gross mass compared. Height should be the loaded travel height with the machine on the deck. Notices, state rules and route conditions can change the outcome, so treat the result as a first check before confirming with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator or the state road authority.

Australian road transport limits and permit path

Standard Limits (No Permit)

  • Width2.5 m
  • Height4.3 m
  • Length (single vehicle)12.5 m
  • Length (with trailer)19.0 m
  • Gross Mass42.5 t

Over-Dimensional Thresholds

  • Class 1 OSOMPermit required
  • Width over 3.5 mEscort required
  • Width over 5.0 mPolice escort
  • Height over 4.6 mRoute survey

When the result says “permit required”

  1. Check whether a national or state notice already covers the route and combination.
  2. If not covered, apply for a Class 1 OSOM permit through NHVR Go.
  3. For Northern Territory or Western Australia trips, apply directly to the relevant authority.

Have this ready before you apply

  • Loaded dimensions and gross mass
  • Vehicle / trailer combination details
  • Axle masses and spacings if relevant
  • Intended route and site access points
  • Confirmation the load is a large indivisible item
  • Any third-party approvals or supporting notes

Disclaimer: This calculator provides general guidance only. Actual permit requirements vary by state, route, and load configuration. Always verify with the relevant state transport authority before transport.
