How to make a Gantt chart online
- 1. Start from a template or a blank chart. Pick one of 7 templates (simple project plan, product launch, event plan, software release, house build, civil roadworks and commercial fit-out) or start blank.
- 2. List the tasks. Type each task into the grid with its start date and duration in working days. Add phases to group tasks and milestones to mark key dates.
- 3. Link the tasks. Type predecessor row numbers, such as 3 or 4SS+2, or drag from the end of one bar to another. Linked tasks move automatically when an earlier task changes.
- 4. Adjust on the timeline. Drag a bar to move it, or drag its right edge to change its length. Dates snap to working days.
- 5. Check the critical path. Tasks with no float are highlighted in red. These are the tasks that delay the finish date if they slip.
- 6. Export or share. Download a PNG image, a PDF or a CSV file that opens in Excel or Google Sheets, or copy a share link that carries the whole chart.
What a Gantt chart is
A Gantt chart is a project schedule drawn as horizontal bars on a timeline. Each row is a task, the bar runs from the task's start date to its finish date, and arrows show which tasks depend on others. Phases group related tasks, and milestones mark key dates such as an approval or a handover.
The chart answers three questions at a glance: what happens when, what has to finish before something else can start, and which tasks set the finish date. Project managers use it to plan, to agree dates with a team or client, and to see the effect of a delay before it happens.
Critical path and float
The critical path is the longest chain of linked tasks through the project. A task on it has no float: if it takes a day longer, the project finishes a day later. Float is how many working days a task can slip before it delays the finish. This tool counts both in working days, so a weekend never shows up as spare time.
The four dependency types
- Finish to start (FS)
- Paint the walls after the plasterboard is finished.
- Start to start (SS)
- Start kerbs two days after the base course starts.
- Finish to finish (FF)
- Documentation finishes when development finishes.
- Start to finish (SF)
- The old system keeps running until the new one starts.
Add a lag to wait a number of working days after the link condition, or a lead (a negative lag) to overlap. In the predecessors column, 4FS+2 means “start two working days after task 4 finishes”.

Gantt chart maker questions
Is this Gantt chart maker really free?
Yes. The Gantt chart maker is free to use with no account, no trial period and no watermark on the chart itself. Exported images carry a small line naming the tool.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. It runs in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. You only need an account if you want to move the chart into a TaskRox project.
Where is my Gantt chart saved?
In your browser's local storage on the device you are using. It is not sent to TaskRox. Clearing your browser data deletes it, so export a CSV or copy a share link if you want a backup.
How do I share a Gantt chart?
Choose Share and copy the link. The whole chart is packed inside the link itself, after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part of a link to a server, and the TaskRox page analytics are set to ignore it. Anyone with the link sees a copy they can edit without changing yours.
Can I open the chart in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Export CSV writes one row per task with its dates, duration, progress, owner and predecessors. You can also import a CSV from another tool. Columns named Task, Start, Finish, Duration or Predecessors are recognised automatically.
Does it skip weekends and public holidays?
Yes. Durations are counted in working days. You choose the working week, add your own non-working days and can exclude Australian national or state public holidays for 2024 to 2028.
What is the critical path?
It is the chain of linked tasks that sets the finish date. A task on the critical path has no float, so any delay to it delays the whole project. The tool works out float in working days for every task and highlights the critical ones in red.
How many tasks can a chart have?
Up to 500 rows (tasks, phases and milestones together) and 1000 links, with phases nested inside phases.
Can I use it for a construction schedule?
Yes. There are house build, civil roadworks and commercial fit-out templates; the house build and roadworks schedules mark inspections and hold points as milestones. For a live project, TaskRox adds Microsoft Project and Primavera P6 import, baselines, and links from schedule tasks to RFIs and daily reports.
Can I move my chart into TaskRox later?
Yes. Start a 14-day free TaskRox trial, open a project's Gantt page in the same browser and accept the offer to import your saved chart. The tasks, dates, phases, milestones and links are carried across.
